The Qube is a new stylish range of sealed Bio-Reactors. They are capable of both of solids capture and Bio-filtration. The units have a unique Bio-mechanical stage, which capture larger solids before they enter the main biological stage. This reduces the need for over backwashing of the filter media. Inside the unit’s bio-reactors hundreds of different species of bacteria will be colonising. Most of these are classified as Heterotrophic which actively breakdown organic waste into carbon dioxide. Most important of these are the nitrifying bacteria’s Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter which convert the toxins’ Ammonia and Nitrite into less harmless Nitrate.
The-Qube’s are so much more efficient than filters which are much larger in capacity. Being a sealed unit the waste products from the pond oxidise at a much slower rate than filters, which are open to the atmosphere, and heavily aerated. This becomes more evident when cleaning these filters; you can have a heavy unpleasant odour similar to rotten eggs. The Qube range eliminates these odours and prevents the build up of Hydrogen sulphide gases which are toxic to fish. Also adding heavy aeration to the media destabilises organic matter returning it to pond, this process is called de-particulation.
The Qube’s use a different method and actually particulate organic matter through its unique flow patterns. The cleaning process is the only time heavy aeration is added and de-particulation of the organic matter can take place. The cleaning process removes all the organic matter from the orbs and the liquid waste can be drained away. Another significant feature is the lack of Gnat larvae making The Qube range ideal for indoor use (no flies or unpleasant smells).
The Qube - 200/300/400 Models
The 200 model is the smallest in the range and is ideally suited for the tropical /marine industry. It is versatile and
be fitted into most cabinets. Being a sealed system The-Qube can replace canisters and open sump type filtration. With its self- cleaning system, indoor tank filtration can be taken to a new level. The 300 model is the next size in the range, and is suitable for smaller ponds up to 1,000 galls.The 300 are ideal for surface skimmers and quarantine ponds or larger Aquariums.
The 400 model has been designed also with smaller ponds in mind and is suitable for ponds up to 2500 galls.In Fact The-Qube 400 used as biological water polisher will give the same results that you can expect from a sand filter. The main difference being Qube’s are biological and sand filters are mechanical only. The-Qube range use very low wattage pumps, this compares favourably to the power hungry pumps needed to run sand filters. These units are extremely versatile and can be bolted onto any existing filter units with ease, in fact being a sealed unit the pump fed version can also be fitted below, above or level with the pond. They are also ideal for providing skimmers with bio-mechanical filtration. Many filters claim to give excellent water clarity; seldom do any of them achieve this. Extensive testing in the field has proved that The-Qube range can and does deliver excellent water Quality and clarity.
The Qube - 600 Model and 800 Model
The 600 model has been designed for ponds up to 6,000 gallons and the 800 unit for ponds up to 10,000 gallons the 600 & 800 units also have integrated U.V clarifiers this eliminates the need for an external unit. This Provides The Qube with another important feature (footprint) being a Cube it has one of the smallest footprints on the market, making the need for large filter housings a thing of the past, thus making The-Qube range of filters very cost effective
The-Qube is a watertight unit that can be fitted above the water level, level or below water levels in fact the Qube
can be fitted almost anywhere. The-Qube is also pleasing to look at and can easily be disguised as an ornamental
object. The units are only pressurised with water and allow water to flow freely through them. The-Qube
comes complete with media and all necessary pipe work fittings to get you started, just simply plug and play.
The unit’s second Bio-reactor has been designed with a central sliding tower array. The tower array slides down to keep the media in suspension. This prevents detritus from escaping the media bed. The water exits through a bottom drain; the bottom drain plate has the main air/water cleaning system integrated within it. This particular design enables total control over the cleaning cycle.
Low Wattage Pumps
The-Qube has been designed with low wattage pumps in mind. Low wattage pumps or recirculating pumps require a small head height and little resistance if they are to perform to their full potential. The Qube’s unique UV assembly allows clean water to flow through the filter to the Pump. The pond water is then pumped directly back to the pond without having to encounter resistance from the UV.
Bio-Reactor Unit Cleaning
Cleaning the Units bio-reactors are made simple with the integrated air systems. These can found inside each bio-reactor. Air is passed up through the media making it bubble, the media is spherical and rotates when being cleaned, this discharges any debris trapped on the media. Once the media is clean the waste water is then removed. No waste water is left in the bio-reactors after discharge; this is due to the unit’s waste systems being flush fitting with the base. You can also purge directly to waste by by-passing the biological stage of the filter.
The Qube range of filters are designed to be fed directly either from bottom drains or by submersible pumps. They can have a mechanical stage prior to the units although this is not necessary.The slow oxidisation of the waste matter prevents the build up of harmful toxins. In fact in trials the units have been left for long periods of time without cleaning and no detrimental effects were noted. The units have now been running for a number of years on a comparison basis and have in every instance they have outperformed their rivals both in water quality and clarity.

O.R.B.S - How Do They Work?
In Order for filter media to work efficiently it has to follow certain criteria. O.R.B.S (Oxygen reactive
biological spheres) fulfils all of these and more. Its unique design allows for a massive surface area and
is more than 80% more efficient than its leading rivals. O.R.B.S is also chemically resistant and fish safe
Its surface is not smooth and has multiple cavities allowing nitrifying bacteria to colonise with ease.
O.R.B.S has a specific gravity which allows it to be semi-buoyant. Also unlike other similar media
O.R.B.S has been designed with a void space in mind. Once compacted by the water flow most other
media’s fail to achieve their full potential, this is mainly because water cannot penetrate to all the surface
area. O.R.B.S has overcome this problem with a row of E.V.Ps (external void protectors) these surround
the centre of each sphere. Each sphere cannot totally close the gap to the next. This allows water to flow
evenly around and through.
Another important design feature is the media’s ability to self clean. Every time you backwash the media
it rotates slothing off any dead bacteria this allows for new bacteria to colonise. The-Qube has been
designed around the media; backwashing uses a small amount of water and can be carried out on a
regular basis. All media start out being productive, over time organic waste builds up and reduces the
nitrifying bacteria’s ability to remove toxins. Regular cleaning of the O.R.Bs media will prevent organic
build up prolonging bacterial life.
One of the most important aspects of keeping a successful Koi pond is biological filtration. Orbs are a
new generation of filter media specifically designed for the aquatic industry and are not bi-products
from other industries.
New Pond Syndrome
No doubt you may have heard of this term before, they should really be named IBF’s (Immature Biological
filters). This period is when colonisation of the media is taking place. Toxic levels of ammonia and nitrite
are not being converted fast enough into less toxic nitrate. IBF’s can and do cause fish health problems.
Toxic ammonia can cause extensive tissue damage both to the gills and kidneys. High ammonia levels
will also inhibit the immune system leaving koi vulnerable to disease and death. IBF’s also result in high
nitrite levels, which reduce the amount of oxygen absorbed by red blood cells, this causes a condition
called methemoglobinemia, more commonly known as (brown blood disease). The Hemaglobin in
red blood cells is converted to methemoglobin causing hypoxia and eventual death. The addition of
sodium chloride ions (salt) will inhibit the uptake of methemoglobin reducing its toxicity. IBF’s come to
maturity when nitrogenous waste is converted to nitrate. This is accomplished by the nitrifying bacteria
Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter; this is also more commonly referred to as the (Nitrogen Cycle).
Orbs have a massive biological surface area and are up to 80% more efficient than other leading
biological media. Also unlike other media the surface is grainy not smooth, this grainy surface is ideal for
the nitrifying bacteria’s nitrosomonas and nitrobacter to secrete their sticky slime matrix. Once colonised
the dense bio-film is more resistant to cleaning which in turn accelerates the biological process.
Compacted media such as beads and similar types are excellent at trapping solids. They give good water
clarity but fail to achieve full biological capability. Put simply, most compacted media do not have void
spaces and water is inhibited from flowing freely around the surface area. Most commercial media are
by-products from other industries. These by-products have large surface areas and have been adapted
for use in biological filters; unfortunately they seldom have void space and once compacted the surface
area is significantly reduced.
Orbs unique design overcomes this with EVP’s (External Void Protectors). Encompassing the Orbs,
EVP’s never allow the spheres to totally compact, allowing water to flow freely around the surface area.

Orbs have been designed with durability in mind and the unique design has internal and external protection. The internal surface area is protected from being crushed by specially designed cavities. Having multiple cavities instead of one gives the sphere its integral strength. The outside surface area is well protected by the EVP’s. Unlike other dual surface media or open cell media. Orbs strength provides structural integrity against the crushing effects of being compacted.
This structural integrity ensures the spheres maintain maximum productivity while colonising nitrifying bacteria.
Mechanical and Biological
Mechanical & biological filtration is really one and the same unless a completely separate filter is used for
both; also the mechanical filter would need to be anaerobic (without oxygen) and could not be classed as
biological. Most mechanical filters are attached to a main filter in some fashion or another and if they are
fed by oxygenated pond water they will provide aerobic (with oxygen) conditions for nitrifying bacteria to
colonise. Orbs are designed for biological filtration but are extremely efficient at solids removal.
Orbs come in two sizes 12mm & 8mm. The large Orbs (12mm) are used for both solids removal and
as a first and second biological stage. Regular cleaning of the first bio-reactor will ensure the removal
of most of the solids above 80 microns. The Smaller Orbs (8mm) are designed for The-Qube 200 and
300 units to give a large surface area in a small filter. The smaller Orbs once colonised will develop a
much denser stronger bio film. The second bio-reactor also provides exceptionable water quality and
clarity. Orbs intercept particles between 30 and 80 microns by colliding with the surface area. These
collisions increase particle sizes and are more easily removed. Particles below 30 microns are also
removed by a process called bio absorption. This is where particles are removed by the biofilm itself,
although this process happens at a much slower rate.
The whole process will leave you with crystal clear water. Regular cleaning of the second bio-reactor
is also encouraged and because Orbs surface area is well protected very little biomass can be lost. Orbs
media is not meant to have direct aeration and air stones should not be placed under the media. Orbs can
be used in any filter unit but was specifically designed for a new generation of filters, called The Qube
Cleaning Orbs could not be simpler; In fact any filter bay can be retro-fitted with an air cleaning system.
To clean Orbs turn off the water flow, turn on your air pump and orbs will bubble and rotate, this r eleases
any detritus from the media which can then be flushed to waste. If you don’t have an air cleaning system
you can simply agitate the media which again releases any detritus, once you have flushed to waste
rinse the media with pond water until the water runs clear.
Orbs are totally inert making them chemically resistant and are green in colour. Once the orbs have become
colonised the nitrifying bacteria is protected inside the sphere, making the bio-film very productive.
