Barley Straw Mini Bales
In the middle ages sheaves of corn were added to village ponds and wells to help to keep the water pure. More recently farmers have noticed that when straw bales are added to ponds they remain clear.
A small bale of barley straw, each bale treats 4500 litres (1000 galls) total, can be divided up into smaller portions, comes complete with net bag for easy handling. Lasts up to 6 months. Environmentally friendly method of controlling blanket weed and green water in pools.
The late Geoff Hamilton of Gardeners World used barley straw at Barnsdale to keep the ponds clear of algae. Algae is a simple plant and in our ponds the two most common are:- strings of green hair like growth commonly called blanket weed single floating cells which in sufficient quantities colour the water green hence its common name green water
